Computer Care (Physical) Tips

Computer Care (Physical) Tips

You likely clean your office and ask employees to clean their desks, you vacuum the floors and wipe the counters, but when was the last time you thought about the cleanliness of your actual computer?

Computers are no different than anything else- they need to be kept clean in order to last. When it comes to the “cleanliness” of your computer, this extends beyond cleaning the smudges off your screen- we’re talking about the cleanliness of the internal computer and the external appearance.

Many of our clients and business professionals utilize PCs in their day to day business. Plus, we’re big fans of PCs at PK Tech and consider ourselves experts how to best care for them.

Here are 6 easy tips for proper computer care and cleaning:

  1. PCs do not like dust and smoke. Dust can cause components to malfunction and short out from the static electricity build up. Smoke kills a PC faster than it kills people, as it can lead to tar build-up on fans and components. Just as you likely avoid dust and smoke as humans, the same rule applies to your PC.
  2. If possible, do not eat or drink around your PC. If you do, know that spilling liquid on your laptop keyboard can short it out. Food dust particles can also cause damage over time. Your computer is better served if you just take that lunch break and leave your desk to eat.
  3. Invest in a quality surge protector, especially if your office is in an older building. Power surges and lightning will short a PC out with one hit. Also consider a battery if your power is really bad so you can work through brown-outs without skipping a beat.
  4. Don’t place your PC in a cramped place without circulation. Leave your PC room to breath (literally). The fans on the front intake cool air and the back fans output hot hair typically. If you restrict either side, you are lowering your PCs lifespan.
  5. Keep magnets away from your PC. Monitors, hard drives, and other components are sensitive to magnets and you can cause permanent damage.
  6. Use computer-grade cleaning supplies. There are special wipes for screens, low-static vacuums for computers, and compressed gas (not air) for dusting. Using the wrong cleaning supplies could ruin your investment.
